摘要

One of the key factors enabling integration and participation of local communities in conservation policies is the legal foundation for this relationship. Brazilian law has developed novel solutions to reconcile the presence of local communities and traditional populations with environmental conservation in protected areas. The logic underlying the law that created the National System of Conservation Units (Law 9985/2000) rests on the valuation of both biodiversity and of the cultural diversity associated with that biodiversity.
