A vibration-based analysis of telescopic cylindrical columns, including the effect of damping has been carried out to obtain its buckling characteristics, using finite element analysis. The effects of intermediate spring at the junctions of different stages and oil-hydraulic pressures inside the plungers on the buckling characteristics of the column have been discussed. Damping has been represented as proportional to mass and also as proportional to mass and stiffness and its effect on load-frequency behaviour of the column has been studied.
