Diploid and triploid Sydney rock oysters, Saccostrea commercialis, were grown at seven sites in New South Wales (NSW) for 25-28 months and exposed to the parasite Mikrocytos roughleyi over two consecutive winters during the period August-November 1994 to December 1996. Triploids showed a higher survival rate than diploids. Over the second winter/spring, average cumulative mortality of diploids across all sites, was 35.0% (range 6.7-76.8%) compared with only 12.2% (range 4.0-18.1%) for triploids. This reduction in mortality during the second year of culture on leases, combined with the growth and condition advantages that triploidy confers, could provide the Sydney rock oyster industry in NSW with significant improvements in profitability.
