Multiple digital squamous cell carcinoma due to 'soluble-oil'

A 77-year-old right-hand dominant Caucasian man presented with a 2-year history of bilateral thumb growths and numerous finger lesions (Figure 1). Past medical history was insignificant and he denied prolonged sun exposure in the past. His employment history revealed 50 years spent as a lathe turner working with 'soluble-oil'. X-Rays revealed complete destruction of both distal phalanges of the thumbs. Subsequently, the patient underwent urgent excision and reconstruction of both thumbs and all (five) finger lesions as well as an area of 'erythroplasia of Queyrat' on the underside of the penis. Histology demonstrated a combination of invasive squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and Bowen's disease. By the time of the 6-month follow up the patient had another SCC excised from his chin.
