Personality and Attitudes of Chinese University Students toward People with Intellectual Disabilities

The purpose of the study was to explore relationships among personality, Chinese cultural values, and attitudes toward people with intellectual disabilities in Chinese university students. Two hundred and forty two Chinese university students participated in the study. Three instruments were used , including the Mental Retardation Attitude Inventory-Revised (Antonak & Harth, 1994), the Chinese Personality Assessment lnventory-2 (Cheung, Leung, Song, Zhang, & Zhang, 1996), and the Chinese Value Survey (Chinese Cultural Connection, 1987). Simultaneous regression analysis indicated that three personality variables (aesthetics, interpersonal tolerance and responsibility) were related to attitudes toward people with intellectual disabilities after controlling the influences of participant's major. The combination of the participant's major, aesthetics, interpersonal tolerance, and responsibility accounted for 20% of the variance in attitudes. Implications of the findings are discussed in the contexts of socioeconomic environments in China.
