Comment on 'The use of the EEG in measuring therapeutic drug action: Focus on depression and antidepressants'

We are writing to comment on the review article 'The use of the EEG in measuring therapeutic drug action: focus on depression and antidepressants' by Alhaj et al. (2011). The authors have written a comprehensive review on the use of neurophysiologic techniques both for characterizing depression and predicting clinical response to antidepressant medication. They appear to have misunderstood, however, the basis for two quantitative electroen-cephalographic (qEEG) analytic techniques developed in our laboratory. The first of these techniques is cordance, a method that combines absolute and relative power measures into a single metric that is normalized both across electrode sites and frequency bands. Alhaj and colleagues write that '(i)t remains unclear exactly what the [cordance] measure actually reflects'.
