During the 2000-2004 period in the experimental field of the Institute of Forage Crops, Pleven, in a collection nursery, productive capacities and morphological characteristics of 8 varieties and 14 populations of birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatusL), originating from Bulgaria, Germany, Russia, France and Yugoslavia were studied as a source of germplasm for the purposes of breeding.The studied varieties and populations of birdsfoot trefoil differed significantly between them by years and on average for the period of study with regard to formed dry mass: 458-647 kg/da; 1073-1676 kg/da; 643-1082 kg/da; 696-1238 kg/da; 213-425 kg/da and 662-952 kg/da (2000-2004), height: 38-34 cm; 27-36 cm; 31-36 cm; 23-33 cm and 31-35 cm (2001-2004 ), stem number: 26-54; 28-48; 18-30; 10-14 and 22-35 (2001-2004) and leafiness: 48.75-56.66%; 55,.44-64.14%; 51.19-60.63% и 56.02-60.05% (2001-2004). Variety Saatgut was distinguished for a high degree of leafiness, which suggests obtaining of high-quality forage. The found weak strength of correlation between height of the dry mass yield (r=0.38), showed that the stem number, the correlation of which was moderate in strength (r=0.50), had greater proportion participation in formation of total biomass. The varieties and populations: K-30, Rodeo, T-4, T-18, T-20 and T-25 showed high productivity of standard Targovishte 1 (6.2-15.9%) and adaptation to the conditions of the study. The differences were significant mathematically. They are carriers of germplasm, being of interest to birdsfoot trefoil breeding.
