During the 2000-2003 period in the experimental field of the institute of Forage Crops, Pleven in a collection nursery, the seed yield from 8 varieties and 14 populations of birdsfoot trefoil : (Lotus corniculatus L) as a source of germplasm with highseed productivity was studied with a view to breeding. The seed yield values of the studied birdsfoot trefoil varieties and populations varied according to years and on average for the period of study within a wide range: from 19 to 38 kg/da, from 12 to26 kg/da, from 12 to 21 kg/da and from 16 to 27 kg/da, CV=21.3; 26.1; 14.4 and 14.7.The difference in seed yield between the studied birdsfoot trefoil. varieties and populations was explained by the greater pod number per reproductive stem and seed number per pod. Strong positive correlation was found between pod number per reproductivestem and seed yield (r=0.78) and seed number per pod and seed yield (r=0.96). Thousand-seed weight varied within a narrower range (CV - 5.5) and slightly influenced the seed yield. The degree of correlation between yield and 1000-seed weight was slight, r=0.29. Varieties K-30 and Bokor exceeded the standard in seed yield at a significant difference, by 18.2% and 22.7%, respectively and population T-4 by 18.2%. They are of interest to the breeding as carriers of germplasm of high seed productivityand are included in a breeding programme for development of new birdsfoot trefoil varieties.
