In the present study, an attempt has been made to disperse metal salts in acrylic acid to improve the refractive index of polyacrylates. The refractive index, impact resistance and heat stability of acrylic acid dispersed with different salts of lead and lanthanum has been improved by the aryl group of an unsaturated carboxylic acid. Similar work carried out by the same authors with barium salts has already been reported earlier. With the materials having the metals dispersed in acrylic acid, lenses were cast and evaluated for optical and thermo-mechanical properties. On the basis of the results obtained for various compositions, it has been found that the compositions with lead monoxide and lanthanum oxide exhibit potential for optical applications. It has been observed that the metal atoms are uniformly dispersed in the system forming a crosslinked structure, which resulted in better hardness and impact properties compared to the polymers without metals.
