A proposed Columbia River coal terminal, the first major export point on the US West Coast in more than a decade, has the tepid support of a local county commission chairman in southwestern Washington ahead of a crucial permit vote next week. George Raiter welcomes the projections of 80 jobs that could come to his county with construction of the terminal proposed by Millennium Bulk Logistics in a region with 11% unemployment. But he remains concerned with the environmental impacts of sending coal overseas to be burned in Asian power plants.
