Watch, listen for the Thumper

DURING many past mine accidents, one commonality that exists is the pounding of rails or roof bolts to alert the surface of trapped miners. Research and development group Battelle is seeking to automate this practice on a much larger and louder scale. Thumper, an acoustic signaling and locating system, is being developed by the Ohio-based firm and partners Pacific Scientific Energetic Materials and GeoSonics/Vibra-Tech.
