A total of 27 analogues of the astigmatid sex pheromone, 2-hydroxy-6-methyl benzaldehyde (6-methyl salicylaldehyde), was prepared and tested against Aleuroglyphus ovatus and Acarus immobilis. Four analogues, 2-methyl benzaldehyde, 2-methyl acetophenone, 6-methyl salicylic acid and 2-methyl benzoic acid, evoked pheromone activity against A. ovatus, of which 6-methyl salicylic acid and 2-methyl benzoic acid exhibited the same level of activity as the pheromone. Five substituted salicylaldehydes (3-isopropyl-6-methyl-, 6-ethyl-, 3-methyl-, 3-ethyl- and non-substituted) and 4-hydroxy-2-methyl benzaldehyde were active against A. immobilis, with activities of one-tenth of that of the pheromone at the most.
