Systemic Acquired Resistance of Pepper to Microbial Pathogens

To cope with the challenge of pathogens, plants haveevolved a wide variety of resistance mechanisms thatrely both on constitutive and on inducible defences.Systemic acquired resistance (SAR), a form of inducibleresistance that occurs following an earlier localizedexposure to a pathogen, provides a long-lasting systemicimmunity against a wide range of pathogens inplants. The great benefits of SAR lead to its practicaluse in agriculture for plant disease management. Pepper(Capsicum annuum) is one of the economicallyimportant crops growing worldwide, and in thisreview, we summarize the scientific research-basedstudies of SAR in pepper during the past decades.Effects of various exogenous inducers of SAR, such assalicylic acid, DL-beta-amino-n-butyric acid, benzothiadiazolsand avirulent pathogens on pepper plantshave been extensively investigated by different researchgroups. Biochemical and molecular studies of SARphenomena also revealed the involvement of radicalburst, cell death, endogenous hormonal signalling anddefence-related gene expression during SAR establishmentin pepper. New knowledge and understandingemerging from the pepper SAR studies will allow thedevelopment of novel approaches to enhance the durableresistance of pepper to pathogens, thereby helpingto secure the future supply of safe and nutritiouspepper worldwide.
