NETL study backs F-T plant as moneymaker

The Energy Department has found in a preliminary analysis that a commercial-scale Fischer-Tropsch plant would be expensive to build - on the order of 4.5 billion dollars - but a solid money-maker if oil prices remain above 37 dollars per barrel. DOE's National Energy Technology Laboratory analyzed the economics of a 50,000-barrel-per-day Fischer-Tropsch plant making diesel, the chemical feedstock naphtha and electricity out of coal if one were built in the southern Illinois Basin.
