As the Environmental Protection Agency prepares to issue its long-awaited technology standard this week for controlling mercury emissions from coal-burning plants, the Energy Department's National Energy Technology Laboratory laid plans to develop systems for capturing mercury before it leaves the smokestack. NETL recently funded eight projects under DOE's Phase II mercury control field tests, lab product manager Tom Feeley said. These projects follow up the lab's first round of short-term tests on mercury control systems. The Phase II projects, in contrast, will test how mercury control technologies hold up over longer periods.
