Introduction: Complications of the retropubic midurethral sling (MUS) procedure for urinary stress incontinence have been well documented since its introduction in 1995. More recent procedures have been developed with the aim of minimising bladder and bowel injury. In 2003, de Leval introduced the TVT-O procedure, in which the tape is placed via the vagina to exit in the groin after piercing the obturator membrane. The procedure is thus described as an 'inside-out' procedure in contrast to those in which the insertion commences in the groin ('outside-in').
