BASED ON research conducted in the 1980s, the Magnet Recognition Program~R was developed by the American Nurses Credentialing Center in the early 1990s. Magnet? recognition has evolved as the global standard for excellence in nursing practice with approximately 300 organizations embracing the criteria and achieving designation. The Magnet Recognition Program places a strong emphasis on structural features and exemplary processes that support excellence in nursing practice. The 2005 program criteria consist of 164 sources of evidence subsumed within 14 dimensions known as the Forces of Magnetism. To achieve recognition, Magnet organizations must demonstrate maturity in the development, dissemination, and enculturation of the sources of evidence wherever nursing is practiced.
