Multilocation field trials were conducted during the 2000/01 rabi season in Shiradshahapur, Murumba, Parva and Parbhani, Maharashtra, India, with pH 7.9, 8.0, 8.2 and 8.3, natural salinity of 4.9, 6.0, 7.4 and 7.9 dS/m, and ESP 11.3, 11.7, 12.1 and 12.4, respectively, to study the degree of salt tolerance of safflower cultivars PBNS-32, A-1, S-13-5, Bhima, S-13-6, JSI-7, PBNS-28, NARI-2, DSH-129 and HUS-305. The average percentage of germination of the cultivars, regardless of salinity level, ranged from 75 to 89. PBNS-32 had the highest germination, which significantly differed with all the cultivars, except S-13-5 and HUS-305. The germination percentage of all the cultivars declined with an increase in salinity levels. PBNS-32 recorded relatively higher germination percentage at all salinity levels. The relative water content in the leaf tissue decreased with increasing salinity. The average relative water content in the leaf tissues, regardless of salinity, ranged from 85 to 91. At high salinity levels, PBNS-32 recorded maximum relative water content. HUS-305 recorded the lowest osmotic potential (-7.79 bars) while PBNS-32 had the highest osmotic potential (-6.00 bars). The seed yield decreased with increasing salinity levels. S-13-5 recorded the highest seed yield (10.0 q/ha) under different salinity levels. S-13-5, PBNS-32, S-13-6 and A-1 were more tolerant to salinity and were at par with each other. NARI-2 recorded the lowest seed yield at all salinity levels.
