Regions around the world are looking to capitalise on the natural resources, local expertise, infrastructure and other advantages that could establish them as part of a future bio-based economy. Brazil’s abundance of sugarcane - a source for ethanol- based bioplastics - is a good example. The access to this feedstock for first-generation bioplastics, coupled with the domestic market opportunities and investment in Brazil’s economic development make this a great location for the likes of Dow Chemical, Mitsui, Braskem and Tetra Pak to build and use commercial production facilities.
