Cordyceps sinensis is psychrophilic in nature. Multiplication of the fungus in submerged culture under specified conditions had potential advantages. Therefore, effect of nutritional sources on the growth of C. sinensis in SDY (Sabouraud's dextrose with yeast extract) broth medium were studied incorporating carbon source (monosaccharides -glucose and fructose or disaccharides-sucrose, maltose and lactose) nitrogen source (inorganic-potassium nitrate, sodium nitrate, ammonium nitrate, ammonium chloride, ammonium sulphate, urea or organic-beef extract) vitamins (folic acid, D-biotin, thiamine, nicotinic acid, riboflavin and pyridoxine) minerals (micro elements-CuSO_45H_2O, FeSO_47H_2O, MnCl_24H_2O and ZnCl_2 and macro elements-CaCl_22H_2O, KH_2PO_4, K_2HPO_4, MgSO_47H_2O and NaCl). Among all the carbon, nitrogen, vitamins and minerals sources used sucrose, beef extract, folic acid and ZnCl_2 produced higher mycelial dry wt per litre of SDY broth. Folic acid produces the max. dry wt (12.42 g/1) of themycelium.
