A New Report on Leaf Rust of Acorus calamus Caused By Uromyces acori From Kerala, India

Sweet flag (Acorus calamus L ) commonly known as Vayambu in Malayalam is an important medicinal and aromatic herb, under the family Araceae, grown for its scented rhizomes. It is a tall perennial wetland monocot with strongly scented rhizomes. This isused in ayurvedic medicine for its odour and as a psychotropic drug. The rhizome is anodyne, carminative, stomachic, diaphoretic, aphrodisiac, expectorant febrifuge, hypotensive and sedative. It is highly valued as a rejuvenator for the brain and nervous system. Plants grown in the medicinal gardens at Vellayani, Kerala were, found to be affected by a severe leaf rust during June 2010.
