The human nuclear receptor (NR) family consists of 48 transcription factors divided into seven classes (Table 1) and activated by a large variety of ligands such as steroids,retinoids,vitamin D,thyroid hormone,pros-tanoids,and cholesterol metabolites such as oxysterols and bile acids.NRs play a key role in a broad spectrum of physiological responses,and some of them,usually referred to as "endocrine" NRs,are clinically exploited drug targets for the treatment of significant diseases such as prostate and breast cancer,liver and coronary heart disease,osteoporosis,and diabetes.
