Soil amendment with oil-seed cakes for the management of phytone-matodes and soil-inhabiting fungi attacking Capsicum annuum L.

The efficacy of oil-seed cakes of neem (Azadirachta indica), castor (Ricinus communis), mustard (Brassica campestris), duan (Eruca sativa), groundnut (Arachis hypogaea), linseed (Linum usitatissimum), soybean (Glycine max) and sunflower (Helianthus annuus) was evaluated against phytonematodes and soil-inhabiting fungi attacking chilli plants under field condition. The incorporation of oil-seed cakes @ 110 Kg N/ha significantly affected the multiplication of phytonematodes such as Meloidogyne incognita, Rotylenchulus reniformis, Tylenchorhynchus brassicae etc. The frequency of occurrence of soil-borne plant pathogonic fungi namely, Macrophomina phaseolina, Rhizoctonia solani, Fusarium oxysporum and Botrytis cinerea also decreased significantly (P=0.05) in the beds applied with oil-seed cakes. However, the frequency of saprophytic fungi such as Aspergillus niger, Trichoderma viridae and Paecilomyces lilacinus was increased. Several-fold improvement was observed in the plant-growth parameters such as plant weight, pollen fertility, chlorophyll and ascorbic acid content. Application of oil-cakes also significantly reduced the development of root-galls caused by Meloidogyne incognita.
