Studies on comparative performance of patchouli (Pogostemon patchouli Benth.) under open and partial shade ecosystem.

Investigations on comparative performance of patchouli (Pogostemon patchouli Benth.) cultivated in open and partial shade of coconut plantation was carried out during 2002-03 in Department of Horticulture, University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad, Karnataka. The results categorically revealed significantly high cumulative fresh herbage yield (27.23 tons/ha), Dry herbage yield (5.063 tons/ha) and oil yield (94.85 kg/ha) from four harvest per year from patchouli crop under partial shade of coconut plantation. Patchouli under open cultivation recorded vigorous growth initially up to two harvest but further failed to regenerate after third harvest registering cumulative fresh herb yield (19.49 tons/ha), dry herbage yield (4.38 tons/ha) and oil yield (82.09 kg/ha) respectively. The per cent oil recovery and quality of oil in terms of percent patchouli alcohol was superior in patchouli cultivated under partial shade.
