Chemical composition of the essential oil from leaves and roots of ginger (Zingiber officinale) from Kerala

The hydro-distilled oils from fresh leaves and fibrous roots of two local cultivars of Ginger (Zingiber officinale Rose.) viz. Kozhikkalan and Vellinchi were analysed by GC and GC/MS. Fifty compounds were identified in the oil from leaves and roots. Kozhikkalan leaf oil contained P-caryophyllene (22.5%) and Vellinchi leaf oil contained cx-humulene (28.1%) as major compound, while the root oils contained ar-curcumene (28.8%) and zingiberene (26.2%) as major compounds, respectively.
