Union Pacific and CSX Transportation announced recently plans to lay oft employees at their respective shops. UP said it plans to eliminate the third shift at its Jenks Shop in North Little Rock, Ark., cutting 201 jobs at the facility. UP cited the economy and an influx of new locomotives as reasons for the decision. The shop employs about 1,100 workers. It does UP's heavy' locomotive overhaul and painting work, among other functions. The railroad received about 520 new locomotives in 2001.
