Ferroelectric liquid crystals with quick response times and large spontaneous polarizations (Ps) are currently much sought after, especially for attaining high speed electro-optic effects. Several liquid crystals derived from optically active compounds have been prepared, which showed quick response time and large spontaneous polarization [1, 2]. Now, new ferroelectric liquid crystals are reported, such as compounds 5 and 6, which have optically active pentafluoroethyl pyranose groups. The measurement of their spontaneous polarization, response time and other physical properties are also reported. As shown in Scheme 1, chiral pyranose derivatives 3 and 4 were prepared from a chiral butenolide 1 via 2 in several steps according to the method previously reported [1-3].
