Chemical reaction for the preparation of Ni-P uitrafine amorphous alloy particles from aqueous solution

Uitrafine amorphous alloy particles (UFAAP) exhibit properties that are considerably different from those of the bulk and crystalline materials. Chemical reduction is an easy way to prepare UFAAP [1], The preparation and reaction mechanism for transition metal-boron alloy (TM-B) UFAAP have been extensively studied [1-4]. However, the reaction for the chemical preparation of Ni-P UFAAP has not undergone thorough investigation, to the best of our knowledge. Ni-P UFAAP can be produced by the reaction between NiCl2 and NaH2PO2 in aqueous solution [5-8]. The reaction has usually been, carried out at temperatures higher than 351 K [5,6]. By using an induction agent such as KBH4, the reaction can be carried out at room temperature because of the autocatalytical behaviour of the reaction [7, 8]. The advantage of the induction method is that the Ni-P UFAAP produced displays spherical particles with uniform size distribution [8, 9]. The chemically prepared Ni-P catalyst was found to exhibit high activity and stability for styrene hydrogenation [9]. In this work, we studied the mechanism of the reaction between NiCl2 and NaH2PO2 in aqueous solution in order to understand the effects of preparation parameters for Ni-P UFAAP.
