FIELD EFFICACY OF NEWER INSECTICIDES AGAINST TOBACCO CATERPILLAR, SPODOPTERA LITURA IN CABBAGE

Newer insecticides like novaluron 10 EC @ 250, 312.5 and 375 ml/ha, emamectin benzoate 05 SG @ 175 g/ha, chlorantraniliprole 20 SC @ 37.5 ml/ha, indoxacarb 15.8 SC @ 325 ml/ha, flubendiamide 480 SC @ 75 ml/ha, spinosad 2.5 SC @ 600 ml/ha were evaluated for their efficacy against Spodoptera litura on cabbage during 2010 and 2011. These were compared with quinalphos 25 EC @ 1000 ml/ha. The pre-treatment population of S. litura larvae varied from 4.00 to 4.90 and 5.80 to 7.30 during 2010 and 2011 crop seasons, respectively. In 2010, lowest mean population of S. litura after 3 days of spray was recorded in the treatment emamectin benjoate and during 2011, it was lowest in novaluron @ 375 ml/ha. After 7 and 10 days of spray, in both the years lowest larval population was observed in novaluron @ 375 ml/ha. During 2010, highest yield was registered in emamectin benzoate @ 175 g/ha (183.75 q/ha) which was on a par with novaluron @ 375 ml/ha (182.42 q/ha). During 2011, significantly higher yield (144 q/ha)was recorded in novaluron @ 375 ml/ha than all other treatments. The highest increase in yield over control was recorded in novaluron @ 375 ml/ha (14.58%). Overall, the present study revealed that novaluron @ 375 ml/ha was most effective insecticide against S. litura on cabbage with reduced damage and enhanced yield.
