Processes running in surface layers when cutting steels with cooling lubricants containing metal complexes

Application of special cooling lubricants (on the basis of water solutions of Versene metal complexes such as Cu, Cr, and Mo) in cutting and finish of steels is discussed. when cutting with these fluids, components of the juvenile steel surface react with the solutions of the metal complexes forming a copper coating on the surface under machining. The coating can serve as a substrate for another coating, e.g. obtained by chrome electroplating. Also it can be used for corrosion protection or producing a decorative layer as well as preventing surface carburization at hardening.
