For just about as long as anyone can remember, Canadian and Colombian coal exporters could count on the strength of the U.S. dollar as a "safety net" of sorts when negotiating annual contracts. Generally speaking, the vast majority of international contracts are settled in U.S. dollars. For the novice few, let's say you are a Canadian coal producer. That certainly gives the company more buying power in its home country - a welcome "cushion" for coal producers.
