This is a comparative study of in vitro regeneration potential of two popular Indian desi chickpea cultivars (JG11 and DCP 92-3). Organogenic ability based on Axillary Meristem Explants (AMEs) of both the cultivars were assessed based on pre-standardized regeneration system of chickpea with employing shoot induction and elongation medium (SIM & SEM). The desi cultivar DCP 92-3, responded better in terms of number of potent AMEs prepared (77.75+4.78) from germinated seedlings, regeneration response from AMEs (83.53±3.00) and number of shoots per explant (11.08+0.19) as compared to JG 11 (4.48+0.44). Further, separated individual shoots of DCP 92-3 exhibited more elongation (1.54+0.23 cm) as compared to their counterparts derived from JG 11 (0.675+0.09 cm), facilitating micro-grafting and subsequently higher plant establishment. The study indicates the amenability of specific chickpea cultivar for in vitro regeneration that could be used for genetic transformation studies.
