摘要

An increase in foodborne diseases has prompted the search for novel antibacterialagents to control foodborne pathogens. In this study, an abietane type diterpenoid,sugiol was isolated from Metasequoia glyptostroboides using a column chromatographicanalysis. The structure of the compound was elucidated by spectroscopicdata analysis. The sugiol (50 mu g/disc) showed potential antibacterial effect as diametersof inhibition zones (10.2 + - 0.3 to 16 + - 0.4 mm)against foodborne pathogenicbacteria.The minimuminhibitory and minimumbactericidal concentrations valuesof sugiol against the employed bacteria were found in the range of 62.5 to 250 and125 to 250 mu g/mL, respectively. Also the compound had strong antibacterial effecton the viable counts of the tested bacteria. Scanning electron microscopic studydemonstrated potential detrimental effect of sugiol on the morphology of Listeriamonocytogenes ATCC 19166. These findings indicate that sugiol could be a possiblecandidate for using in food industry to control foodborne pathogens.
