Australian meat industry: challenging issues and prospects on world export markets.

Australian exports of meat account for approx. 46% of the total Australian production of meat, and 19% of total world exports of meat. Approx. 52 and 33% of Australian meat exports are sold on the Asian and American markets, respectively. However, Australia is highly restricted in its access to world meat markets by the impact of export subsidies and other trade barriers. This paper discusses problems related to the marketing of Australian meat (beef, veal, lamb and mutton) on export markets, and examines the prospects for increasing the vol. of meat exports to Australia's traditional markets. In addition, potential and emerging export markets are identified. Aspects considered include: the Australian meat industry; marketing channels for meat in Australia; Australian meat exports and related issues; export market prospects for Australian meat; and lessons for other meat exporting countries that can be drawn from these findings.
