When George L.Rood sold the Indiana Powder Company and wound up the Independent Powder Company(of Indiana)in 1901,his son,Norman P.Rood,and Alfred G.Cummings,both of whom had been employed by the elder Rood,decided to go into the dynamite business.In April 1902 Cummings,who was the leading spirit in the enterprise,and W.O.Rolle,the company's first superintendent,started the building of a plant on the Missouri Pacific Railway along Center Creek between Webb City and Carthage,Missouri.
