摘要

Fuzzy set theory provides an effective tool for translating vague and imprecise linguistic expression in terms of numerical form that a computer system can easily assimilate. Applying this theory, the inherent resilience of cognitive thinking can be incorporated in a software system so that it can process imprecise and vague inputs and outputs related by imprecise rules of thumb in the same way as a human expert does. The theory of fuzzy sets and related mathematical formalism now find a wide range of application in fields like, natural and social science, meteorology, communication, diagnosis, pattern recognition, image processing and control engineering.
