Identification OF VIBRIO RELATED BACTERIAL PATHOGENS IN AQUACULTURE BY MOLECULAR TECHNIQUES : A REVIEW

During the past decade, the shrimp aquaculture had witnessed extensive problems worldwide due to microbial diseases. Vibrio infection was reported to be one of the most important reasons. The important species of Vibrio that causes bacterial shrimp diseases include Vibrio parahaemolyticus, V. harveyi, V. vulnificus, V. Damsel, V. anguillarum and V. alginofyticus. The species boundaries are very narrow in the marine environment due to the plasticity of Vtbrio genomes, with frequent horizontal gene transfer events; therefore the identification of Mbrio-related species in the marine environment is complicated. Since biochemical identification involves many tests and long duration, they developed a PCR that could reduce the number of biochemical tests fof a definitive identification of these organisms. Genomic approaches that are currently being used for identification and typing of Vibrio species viz., DNA-DNA hybridisation, RAPD - PCR, AFLP, ribotyping, rep-PCR, RFLP-PCR ERIC, IS and AP - PCR fingerprinting have high discriminating power in recognizing the strain variation existing among the Vibrio species. The current study was therefore undertaken in a detailed review to highlight different bacterial genes and some of the important molecular techniques used to accurately identify the disease-causing Vibrio pathogens in aquaculture.
