This is my final editorial as the editor of the Journal of Family Therapy and, not surprisingly, I use it to reflect on the last 5 years of the Journal. The context of these years of publication has been a troubled global economy that has set the stage for the decline of public spending (and hence a reduction of family therapy posts in the UK) and a number of distant foreign wars. As editor, I notice that this context has been absent in the pages of this Journal, although with some exceptions (Charles 2010). Indeed, apart from some articles about global family therapy (Sim 2012), most of our copy has echoed the big changes that have influenced family therapy outside this immediate context. Thus, many articles have continued to establish the evidence base for family and couple therapy (Carr 2009, Snyder and Halford 2012) while others have continued a series of internal debates about, for instance, diversity practice (Butler 2009) or collaboration (Zimmerman 2011).
