摘要

In the spring of 2001, emergency nurses from St. Joa's Hospital in Oporto, Portugal, began researching trauma education for nurses. They were familiar with the American College of Surgeons' Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) course, because many of their physicians had done some training in the United States and ATLS was offered in Portugal. The English language is very prevalent in Portugal. Most professional medical and nursing textbooks are in English. Television, radio, and the internet are from England or the United States and English has been taught as a second language in schools for several years. St. Joa's Hospital is the largest medical facility in northern Portugal. It has all of the major specialty services and receives most of the major trauma-related injuries. However, there is no official trauma system in Portugal, or formal trauma designation for medical facilities. There was also no recognized trauma education course for nurses; Portuguese physicians were very supportive of bringing trauma nursing education to their country and were instrumental in the process.
