Stanley (Bob) Davis: An outstanding contribution to drug delivery.

It is with great pleasure that I, as the guest editor, introduce this special issue of Journal of Drug Targeting in recognition of Professor Stanley (Bob) S. Davis as the 2010 receiver of the Life-time Achievement Award of the journal. I was first introduced to Bob Davis at an APGI conference in Paris in 1980, by Professor Mike Groves. Both Bob Davis and I were giving presentations at the conference, I, first time publically presenting in English, on "Particle Contamination in Parenteral Fluids," and he, on "Studies on the stability and in vivo deposition of intravenous emulsions." Bob Davis was already at that time a highly recognised scientific figure in the field of Drug Delivery, especially due to his pioneering works in areas as diverse as colloidal systems (emulsions), rheology of semisolids, oral controlled-release systems, and his current occupation as a professor at University of Nottingham in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences. However, when I told him during our first meeting that I had never heard of him, he was very surprised, and his ego somewhat battered. This meeting led to a life-long scientific collaboration and marriage, for which I am very grateful.
