摘要

This invention relates to an innovation of designing and use of dental implant as drug delivery devices. A porous dental implant has a space within the implant for a scaffold carrying medications .The abutment is screw free. A cervical ring secures the abutment and provides retention. The abutment also has a central vent with multiple accessory lateral vents for refilling the scaffold whenever necessary. The opening in the abutment can be closed with a disposable cap. The abutment and the implant body have a novel involute spline connection which prevents micro movements and rotation. The tight adaptation between the inner walls of the cervical ring and the outer walls of the abutment prevents micro-leakage. In case of solid dental implants, a removable cartridge for carrying medication made of a biocompatible and semi-permeable material can be used to deliver the drugs in a controlled manner through the oral, sublingual or buccal route. This implant design provides a continuous, long term, pain-free, systemic and local drug delivery along with replacement of the missing teeth. The dental implant design can also be used in orthopedics to deliver drugs locally.
