I thank Berend and Develter [1] for reading our article [2] with such keen interest. As they have rightly pointed out that we have been measuring lactate in human sepsis for more than a century but still there is a lot of ambiguity regarding its clinical role, we conducted this study, which simply aimed at evaluating the causes, incidence, and impact on outcome of admission hyperlactatemia in patients admitted to a general medical intensive care unit without looking into the pathophysiology or underlying mechanism for hyperlactatemia [2].
