摘要

Picture this: An international student, "Kevin," attended his first semester at UW-Madison, taking four classes including calculus and literature. He put forth his best effort and worked hard to tackle any obstacles in both classes. At the end of the semester he earned an A in calculus but only a B in literature. What does this mean? For one, it could mean that language was not a very significant factor when it came to learning math. The situation above illustrates how the language barrier might have little or no effect in the calculus class. Kevin confesses that even though he tried his hardest in the literature class, he struggled to get that B. He could understand what he was supposed to do, but he had a tough time expressing his thoughts in writing. However, calculus seemed intuitive to him and he had an easier time going about it.
