The Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) perceives a need to develop and implement modern molecular technologies to advance microbiological diagnostic testing. Regulatory clearance (approval) of rapid, sensitive, and specific molecular diagnostic tests would promote more judicious use of antibiotics, permit pathogen-directed therapy, provide potentially important epidemiologic information, and facilitate conduct of clinical trials of critically needed new antibiotics
