摘要

Across the chemistry curriculum, implementation of problem-based learning is widespread with the goal of increasing student interest, engagement, and understanding. This trend is evident in the laboratory with an increasing number of reports in the literature describing undergraduate laboratory exercises based on real-life problems (1-8). As chemistry related to environmental applications or issues becomes increasingly mainstream at all levels of the chemistry curriculum (9-15), the inclusion of environmentalassessment or management becomes attractive, since these types of problems illustrate the applicability of chemistry in solving realworld problems.Students may become motivated if they can see the utility of their work and feel that they are making a difference.
