摘要

The coordination of lecture and laboratory topics whilesimultaneously covering necessary laboratory techniques isalways a challenge. It was our desire to develop a new laboratoryexperiment that uses ether chemistry during a portion of ourlaboratory course that also concentrates on ~1H NMR interpreta-tion and works to build students' synthetic skills for multistepsynthesis. It was natural to turn to the Williamson ether syn-thesis as an option because it is such a workhorse of syntheticorganic chemistry (1). The preparation of allyl phenyl ether alsooffers the opportunity to perform a Claisen rearrangement togive 2-allylphenol, another reaction of ethers typically coveredin organic chemistry lecture (1).
