A recombinant strain of Escherichia coli FBWHR was used for ethanol fermentation from hot-water sugar maple wood extract hydrolyzate in batch experiments. Kinetic studies of cell growth, sugar utilization and ethanol production were investigated at different initial total sugar concentration of wood extract hydrolyzate. The biomass yield, ethanol productivity and yield coefficient, specific rates of sugar utilization and ethanol formation were calculated. The maximum yield of biomass (Y_(x/s)) was 0.022 g/g total sugar consumed with the initial total sugar concentration of 95.33 g/L. At initial total sugar concentration of 47.66 g/L, it showed the highest ethanol yield coefficient (Y_(p/s)), ethanol productivity and the specific rates of ethanol formation, which were 0.38 g ethanol/g total sugar consumed, 0.40 g/(L·h) and 0.62 g ethanol/(g biomass·hour), respectively. The highest ethanol concentration of 24.05 g/L was obtained by using initial total sugar concentration of 70.30 g/L.
