Ports face challenges on the water side to dredge channels deep enough to handle larger ships, but they are also working to increase critical landside capacity that includes rail intermodal connectors. At the Port of Charleston, the South Carolina Ports Authority is developing is a new container terminal on the site of an old Navy yard which was closed in 1994. Phase I of the Navy Base Terminal is set to open in late 2018 or early 2019.
