The work presented herein was focused on modifying the poly(furfuryl alcohol) based composites with fatty acid. The poly(furfuryl alcohol) was synthesized with an acid catalyst, and fatty acid was incorporated via the grafting reaction. The resulting fatty acid modified poly(furfuryl alcohol) was characterized using scanning electron microscope, Fourier transform infrared and X-ray diffraction. It was found that the surface morphology of fatty acid modified poly(furfuryl alcohol) appeared to have a "melting" shape. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) confirmed that the fatty acid grafted on to the poly(furfuryl alcohol). Differential scanning calorimetry and Thermogravimetric analysis thermograms revealed crystallization phenomenon and high heat resistance of the composites due to fatty acid grafting. Mechanical property tests indicated that fatty acid modified furfuryl alcohol resin composites possessed superior flexural and impact strengths, in comparison with furfuryl alcohol resin.
