L.O.T.O. stands for lockout/tagout. If you install, service, or clean equipment, it's something you need to be knowledgeable about. The process of equipment lockout/tagout helps prevent an accident from occurring by isolating any stored energy in equipment, machines or processes. Lockout/tagout means locking out equipment from use and providing tags to warn others that the equipment is inactive. Therefore, switches on equipment cannot be moved to the "on" position, circuit breakers are locked from use, or moving machinery parts are disengaged from operation. Lockout/tagout procedures are utilized when machines are temporarily out of service for repairs, servicing, cleaning, inspection, installation or adjustment, according to the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE).
